Litecoin (LTC) Privacy Guide
Litecoin is the fastest and cheapest accepted currency on Nexus. With MWEB confidential transactions, LTC offers meaningful privacy improvements over base Bitcoin while retaining broad exchange support.
Litecoin: Speed and Optional Privacy
Litecoin was created in 2011 as a faster, lower-fee alternative to Bitcoin. Its 2.5-minute average block time and Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm differentiate it technically. The base protocol is transparent — all transactions, amounts, and addresses are publicly visible on the blockchain, similar to Bitcoin.
The significant privacy development for Litecoin came with the activation of MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks) in 2022. MWEB adds an optional confidential transaction layer that hides sender addresses, recipient addresses, and transaction amounts for transactions explicitly routed through the extension block sidechain.
Unlike Monero's mandatory privacy, MWEB participation is opt-in. This creates a smaller anonymity set than Monero — only the subset of users who actively peel into the MWEB layer share an anonymity pool. Additionally, the peg-in and peg-out transactions between the base chain and MWEB sidechain are visible, creating potential correlation points at the boundary.
- Block time: ~2.5 minutes
- Algorithm: Scrypt PoW
- Privacy feature: MWEB (optional)
- MWEB hides: Amounts, addresses
- Default privacy: None (opt-in)
- Wallet support: Litecoin Core, Electrum-LTC
- Exchange support: Wide (incl. non-KYC)
Using MWEB Confidential Transactions
MWEB (MimbleWimble Extension Blocks) is the privacy layer built into Litecoin Core. To use it:
Step 1: Install Litecoin Core
Download Litecoin Core from litecoin.org. Verify the cryptographic signature before installation. Litecoin Core supports MWEB natively without plugins. Allow the blockchain to sync fully before attempting MWEB transactions.
Step 2: Enable MWEB Wallet
In Litecoin Core, MWEB is accessed by selecting "MWEB" as the address type when generating a receive address. MWEB addresses start with "ltcmweb1" prefix, distinguishing them from standard LTC addresses. Send your LTC to an MWEB address to peel into the confidential layer.
Step 3: Transact Within MWEB
Transactions between MWEB addresses are confidential — amounts and addresses are hidden. When peeling out back to the base chain, the peg-out transaction is visible but the internal MWEB transaction history is not. For darknet market use, send to the market's deposit address from within MWEB to maximize privacy.
Peg-In / Peg-Out Correlation Risk
The base-chain to MWEB peg-in transaction is publicly visible. If you peel in a specific amount and peel out the same amount within a short time window, correlation is possible. Extend the time between peg-in and peg-out, or transact through intermediate MWEB hops, to reduce timing correlation risk.
Obtaining LTC Without KYC
Litecoin has broad exchange support, including on several non-KYC platforms:
- Bisq Network: Decentralized exchange with LTC trading pairs. No account required. Supports fiat payment methods with BTC or BSQ collateral.
- Swap services: FixedFloat, SideShift.ai, and SimpleSwap offer LTC without registration below certain amounts. Swap from XMR or BTC to LTC for an additional privacy layer at the acquisition point.
- Peer-to-peer trading: In-person cash purchases with a fresh Litecoin address for each transaction.
- Instant exchanges: Many non-custodial swap platforms include LTC pairs with competitive rates and no KYC requirements for standard amounts.
After acquiring LTC, peel into MWEB before depositing to any darknet market. Generate a fresh MWEB address for each deposit. Use Litecoin Core connected to a Tor-accessible node or configure the Core client to connect through Tor using the -proxy=127.0.0.1:9050 launch parameter.
